Roy Butler

Roy Butler is the owner of Four Winds Renewable Energy located in Arkport, NY. In 1997 he founded Four Winds and took his home and business off-grid. He has over 15 years of design and installation experience which covers grid-tie and off-grid wind electric, solar electric and solar water pumping systems. Although he still installs systems, he currently devotes most of his time to teaching and developing curriculum for small wind installer courses.

  • A NYSERDA eligible installer of PV and wind grid tie electric systems in NY
  • Co-Chair of the NABCEP Small Wind Technical Review Committee
  • Chair of the NABCEP Small Wind Installer Exam committee
  • Co-Chair of the NABCEP Small Wind Site Assessor Job Task Analysis Committee
  • A board member of the Distributed Wind Energy Association (DWEA)
  • A board member of the Small Wind Certification Council (SWCC)
  • An organizer and presenter for the small wind track at the Windustry Community Wind Across America conferences
  • A workshop instructor for Small Wind Installer Training for various community colleges and tech schools in NY, PA, MA, NJ, CA and MN
  • Recipient of the 2008 SWC Small Wind Installer of the Year award
  • A small wind and PV instructor/consultant for the “SUNY Greens NY”, the “NY Clean Energy Training Consortiums” and NY BOCES.
  • A small wind instructor for various organizations, including NYSERDA, Long Island Power Authority, Minn. Renewable Energy Society, Windustry, Solar Energy International and the Interstate Renewable Energy Council
