GEAR: Pika Energy’s T701 Wind Turbine

Initially beta-tested in 2013, Pika Energy’s small wind turbine was certified by the Small Wind Certification Council (SWCC) early in 2016. This 9.8-foot-diameter machine uses glass-reinforced polymer blades to drive a brushless permanent-magnet alternator. It is a horizontal-axis, upwind-rotor, free-yaw turbine, with a tower-top weight of 93 pounds. The SWCC-certified rated energy output is 2,420 kWh per year in a 5 m/s (11.2 mph) annual average wind speed. At 38.3 dB, it is the quietest SWCC-certified turbine. Pika’s inverters and charge controllers can also accept PV and wind inputs via the REbus 380 VDC bus. This turbine has a five-year limited warranty. (
