I had been looking for a whole-house AC utility monitor to track my utility electricity consumption beyond what I produce with my PV system. I wanted to be able to graph my energy usage daily, weekly, and monthly. However, none of the available data logging systems I found were user-friendly or affordable.

That changed when I found the Efergy Elite wireless electricity monitor. After a year of use, I can say this product meets my requirements nicely. It is a plug-and-play device, connected to my service panel. Two sensors encircle each of the two hot leads from the utility meter, and plug into a battery-powered transmitter, which mounts on the wall next to the main breaker box. It transmits wirelessly to the monitor that can be moved around the house. It displays power consumed in real-time by all circuits, and circuits (or individual appliances) can be turned off one by one to get consumption detail. The monitor is capable of data logging power (and energy) use in various ways, including cost at present rates. This system can also be used by off-gridders, regardless of the power supply.

This monitor suits my needs nicely, and took less than 30 minutes to install and configure. Also, the price was reasonable, at approximately $150 Canadian. Please note that I do not sell these products, nor am I affiliated with the manufacturer or distributor in any way. Home Power has helped me so much for so many years, and now I like to spread the word on appropriate technology when I can.

Update for 2016: Neurio monitoring. Attaches in the same way, web based graphing and monitoring and data downloading. They offer a "plain" version and a solar-equipped-house version (4 CTs instead of just 2). I use the plain one in my home. An optional paid-upgrade uses "smarts" to detect and estimate individual appliance behaviours, but I don't use that (maybe still in development?). I'd prefer to build this myself but they did such a great job on the software...
Edit: requires and uses your wifi hotspot to send updates every second - frequent but tiny data uploads to 'home base' where your data is made visible.

I have the Efergy E2 monitor and have found it to be an excellent device. I connected it in my electric panel, where it does not sense my grid-tied PV, which is "upstream" of my panel. It senses power going through my panel, upstream of submeters for my water heater and heat pump and other household loads. (A minor technical note: it is not a true kW meter, which must measure the varying amperage and voltage continuously. The voltage is a fixed adjustable input to the Efergy unit - I set mine at 117V.).

Does anyone know if it will display a negative number, i.e. when my grid tied PV is producing more than my usage and pumping back into the grid? Same question about the their computer software; does it display negative usage?'s picture

A couple years ago I tried a similar system from Australia called Watts Clever. Much the same in being easy to set up BUT the wireless radio frequency used (433 MHz) is also used by other wireless things like key fobs and wireless thermometers. The other signals on the wavelength were messing up the readings to the point the unit was useless. They didn't have the capability for using other bands in the 433 bandwidth, so sadly I had to eat the cost because I couldn't ship it back to Australia. Thinking it would work fine at a remote location where you have control over what wireless devices are used. It has sensors for alternative energy input and main panel use along with a wireless remote display. I really wish it had worked for me.

Being the geek I am, in the end I purchased a basic, but still sophisticated, system from Brultech (ECM-1240). It allows tracking of solar production, consumption at the main panel, and tracking of five more auxiliary circuits. Setup is fairly complex and you need to know how to work safely inside an electrical panel. It took me several months to learn the lingo and some new computer skills. That said, now that it is fully operational have a real time dashboard for the monitored circuits and a watt vs time historical database that can be displayed graphically in multiple ways.
