Vacation Bypass Valve

Typically a ball valve that allows a thermosyphon at night on antifreeze systems to cool the system during times of little or no use of hot water.

Valve Regulated Lead Acid Batteries

Batteries that do not allow access to the batteries' electrolyte, but have non-openable valves which allow any excess pressure to escape.

VAWT

A vertical-axis wind generator (VAWT) is a wind generator that spins on a vertical axis.

Veggie Oil

A fairly broad spectrum of vegetable-based oils used for vehicle fuel, home heating fuel, or conversion to biodiesel. It is most often canola oil, but can include cottonseed, sunflower, and coconut oil.

Ventilation

The act of exhausting old, stale air within a building and supplying new, clean air to take its place. This can be accomplished either with natural/passive or mechanical ventilation systems.

Vertical-Axis Wind Turbine

A wind generator that spins on a vertical axis. Types include Savonius, Darreus, and others. Despite their popularity with newcomers, these are less efficient and effective than horizontal-axis machines, and we rarely see manufacturers of this design last long in the marketplace.

Voltage

The unit of electromotive force, or electrical pressure, denoted either by the scientific symbol E or the electrical symbol V.

Voltage Drop

The loss of voltage to heat due to wire resistance, which is a factor of length, current, temperature, and conductor diameter.

Voltage Potential

The difference in electrical pressure between two given points.

VRLA

Valve regulated lead acid (VRLA), or sealed lead-acid batteries, do not allow access to the batteries' electrolyte, but have non-openable valves which allow any excess pressure to escape.
